  • How long can I expect my new roof to last?

Naturally, there are a few factors that can lengthen or shorten the life of your roof, but in general, an asphalt roof can be expected to last about 20 years, while a metal roof will last a conservative 50 years. Neill and Son Roofing offers a 50 year asphalt shingle, which is stronger than the typical 20 year shingle. You can expect these shingles to last longer than usual, but normal wear and tear will still occur. Things like climate, extreme weather, and maintenance can affect the lifespan of your roof. If you live in an area that regularly gets heavy snowfall or high winds, your roof might take a bit more wear and tear than is standard. Alternatively, roofs that are regularly inspected, maintained, and washed can be expected to last a bit longer.

  • How much does a new roof cost?

This is a tough one to answer because everyone’s home is different. The best way to get a solid estimate is to simply call Neill and Son Roofing and schedule your free estimate. Know that every aspect of your home, like shape, size, and location, will affect the price of your new roof, as will the material you choose. Call our roofing company today for a free estimate!

  • Can my roof be insured?

It’s good to know that in most cases, your roof is protected from major unexpected damage, like vandalism or fire, by your homeowner’s insurance policy. In terms of minor issues, like cracking or curling shingles, most roofs come with a warranty. Typically, a roofer’s warranty for the labor on your roof is at least 10 years.

With Neill and Son Roofing, we offer a 15 year labor warranty and we have access to the best product warranty available. We will use any asphalt shingle brand that a customer may want, but we recommend and typically use IKO Dynasty shingles. IKO offers the best warranty on the market, a 50-year architectural shingle, and is rated the #1 shingle by major contractors (see our asphalt roofing page for more). To learn more about IKO and their warranty, visit their website and if you have any further questions do not hesitate to call us.

  • My roof is leaking, does it need to be fully replaced?

The short answer is YES! Generally speaking, if your roof is beginning to leak in multiple places it needs to be replaced. Roofing repairs can be expensive, and it does not insure that other parts of the roof will remain sturdy. After many years of experience, we recommend giving us a call and letting us analyze the situation. If a repair will fix the situation then we are happy to help. However, we have noticed a trend over the years that when a roof begins to leak, it is a sign that it is getting to the end of its useful life. In summation, a repair may be a poor use of money if the roof is in need of replacing in the first place. Contact us today and we will help you sort out this situation and save you money!

  • Can I just have shingles put over my existing roof to save money?

We HIGHLY reccommend that you DO NOT allow any contractor to simply lay another layer of shingles over your exisiting roof. This is the cheaper option for a reason, it does not work! By going over exisiting shingles you decrease the life of the new roof, risk losing warranties, and are at a higher risk for leaking and roofing damages.

If you choose to go with an asphalt roof replacement, make sure you have the roof stripped off and repaired in any areas where damage has occured. At Neill and Son Roofing we tear off and repair all asphalt projects. This talkes much more effort and time, but we know it is the proper way to do the job. We don't give you anything but the best!

Now, if you are looking for a metal roof installation, this may not be the case. Metal roofs can be installed over asphalt shingles. However, there is a right way to go about this. We have our roofing crew inspect and analyze the condition of your roof. They will then tear off shingles and repair the undelayment of the roof in areas of need. From there they will complete the metal roofing process. To learn more about our metal roofing process, visit our metal roofing page.

  • How can I tell my roof is beginning to fail?

When you’re trying to determine how healthy your roof is, the first thing to note is its age. An asphalt roof that’s older than 20 years is overdue for replacement. More often than not, your roof will begin to show signs of wear and tear as it approaches the 20-year mark. Shingles that are curling, areas where they’ve cracked or maybe gone missing, or shingles that are missing the granules on top are indicators that your roof is in need of replacement. As always, leaking is another sign that the roof may need to be replaced. Your roof may not be 20 years old, but poor installation by a previous roofer may cause your roof to only last 10-15 years. Be sure to keep an eye out for these warning signs so you can avoid any serious damage to your home.

  • What is flashing?

There are a lot of roofing blogs out there that tell homeowners to check their flashing for damage regularly, but not a lot of them explain what exactly flashing is: it’s the material that’s used over joints in roof construction. It functions as an added layer of protection that keeps water from seeping into vulnerable areas like the valleys in your roof, the area around pipes and your chimney, and around any skylights. Most flashing is made out of aluminum or galvanized steel. From time to time it can come loose or deteriorate at a faster rate, allowing leaks to form in those vulnerable areas. Neill and Son Roofing always repairs flashing as needed, so this is something you will not have to worry about when going with us!

  • How long will it take to replace my roof?

This all depends on the size and aspects of your project. On average, we are able to get done with a roof in 1-2 days. Location, condition of the roof, number of layers of shingles, weather, size of the home, and more play a role in the time it takes to complete the job. We promise to get the job done as quickly as possible, but we also want to ensure it is done to the highest quality. Know that when you choose Neill and Son Roofing our roofing contractor will not sacrifice quality for speed. Every home is treated as if it is our own!

  • When is the best time of year to replace my roof?

In western Pennsylvania, the best time is Spring, Summer, and Fall. We will work on roofs in the winter, but typically weather is not ideal and it is best to be done during warmer months. There is a common misconception that roofing cannot be done in the summer because it is too hot. This is not true. In fact, summer is one of the best times to work! There are only so many months where roofing can be done, so do not wait for the busy seasons (spring and fall) to schedule your roof replacement. Take advantage of the warm months and call our roofing contractors today!

  • Why does my roof have dark and green spots?

In climates such as Pennsylvania, this is normal. Older shingles, like the ones that are probably on your house if you are reading this question, do not have the newer technology that is available today. Those dark and green spots on your roof are algae or water spots.

At Neill and Son Roofing we typically use the IKO Dynasty shingle. This shingle has a new attribute and technology that fights againt the growth or algae and dark spots. When you go with us, you get the best product that will look the best the longest!
